Basic Fetal Monitoring

Course Description:

This workshop is for the newer nurse who has little or no knowledge of fetal monitoring. The content will include an introduction to basic principles, physiology, and case reviews.

About the Instructor:

Pat Connors, RNC, MSN, is currently a Perinatal Clinical Nurse Specialist at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. She has more than 35 years experience as a staff nurse and educator. Pat is certified in Inpatient Obstetrics, Electronic Fetal Monitoring, and as a Women's Health Nurse Practitioner by NCC. She is an instructor for the AWHONN Intermediate Fetal Heart Monitoring Course. Pat is also a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant and a member of the AWHONN Consulting Group.

Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome:  Nuts and Bolts

 

Date/Time:  October 11, 2010

Course Description:

 

This workshop provides practical information to help you promote optimal care of infants at risk for Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome including:

  • creating supportive environment for infants and their families
  • increasing consistency in monitoring and scoring for NAS
  • education of parents how to best care for their at risk newborn
  • institute appropriate medical care for infants born to mothers with opiod dependence

 

 About the Instructor:

 

Dr. Bonny Whalen is the Medical Director of the Newborn Nursery at the Children's Hospital at Dartmouth and an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Dartmouth Medical School.  Dr. Whalen is a strong advocate for the promotion of health and optimal beginnings for newborns and their families.  Her areas of interest include caring for the infant at risk for NAS, increasing hospital support for breastfeeding, care of the Late Preterm Infant, and prevention and management of neonatal jaundice.

Labor Support for the Patient and the Nurse

Course Description:

 

Supporting women and their families during the birth process may be one of the hardest aspects of perinatal nursing to learn, but it is a significant part of our work. This hands-on program is designed to bring us back to the basics of labor support so that we can be better coaches for our patients.  Proper technique and ways to avoid injuring ourselves will be highlighted.  

 

Whether you are a new or seasoned nurse, you are welcome to join us, and please dress comfortably as this program will be interactive.   

                         

About our Speakers: 

 

Emily Kelly, ARNP, IBCLC, RNC  is currently a Nationally Board Certified Women's Health Nurse Practitioner.  Emily began her nursing career 10 years ago and has fulfilled multiple roles including OB staff nurse in both tertiary and community hospitals.  Emily is an Internationally Board Cerfified Lactation Consultant, and she teaches Infant CPR and Breastfeeding Basics for the Pregnancy, BIrth and Parenting Program at Littleton Regional Hospital.

 

Tara Kaplan, RN shares her knowledge about labor support from the perspective of a seasoned doula, hospital based childbirth instructor, and recent RN graduate.  Tara has worked in the field of childbirth for ten years and is passionate about providing mothers and her support with an array of time tested techniques that promote a sense of confidence in the mother.  Easy to convey ideas to help work through contractions and demonstration of simple massage techniques and labor positions are the focus of Tara's knowledge.

 

Nancy Hughes, MPT has been practicing for ten years in outpatient orthopedics, specializing in Women's Health issues such as musculoskeletal pain in pregnancy, post-partum recovery, incontinence and pelvic pain.  Nancy has been managing the outpatient clinic in Hudson, NH for the past two years, and has worked with SNHMC Birth Center team over the past several years to provide a team approach to caring for our birthing moms.

Post Anesthesia Care of the Cesarean Birth Patient

Course Description:

 

This course is designed for perinatal nurses who recover cesarean birth patients. Course content includes a review of cardiac anatomy and physiology, basic dysrythmias, anesthetic agents and options, nursing management of the post-operative patient, and practice scenarios.

Karen Tollick, BSN, RN has 30 years of ICU, PACU and ED nursing experience. Karen has 11 years experience as an in-house Critical Care Educator and is Clinical Faculty for Maternal Child Health nursing students

The S.T.A.B.L.E. Program

Course Description:

New Hampshire AWHONN presents "S.T.A.B.L.E." a course for nursery and OB nurses, physicians, and respiratory therapists in community hospitals who work with sick newborns. It addresses what follows after the Neonatal Resuscitation Program, emphasizing six important areas of concern: Sugar, Temperature, Artificial Breathing, Blood Pressure, Laboratory Tests, and Emotional Support (of the family). The mnemonic-based program developed by Kris Karlsen, MSN, RNC, NNP is designed to optimize learning, retention, and recall of information.

 

About the Instructor:

Lisa McNerney, RN, BSJ, MA is the clinical staff educator for Pediatrics/Nursery at Parkland Medical Center, Derry, NH.
